Product Development Technologist
Are you looking to play a critical role sitting between R&D and manufacturing bringing new nutraceutical products to market prioritising quality and volume? This is for you!
Summary
We’re looking for a practical, technically-minded Product Development Technologist to help us take new nutraceutical products from development into reliable and efficient commercial production.
This is a hands-on role that sits between R&D and Manufacturing where you’ll be supporting the industrialisation and scale-up of solid dose products (powders, capsules and tablets) ensuring they run consistently at volume, meet quality expectations and can be manufactured efficiently on our equipment at high volumes.
At TOHC, we manufacture our products in-house, so this critical role is about making products work in the real world. You’ll spend time in the lab, on the factory floor and alongside the teams responsible for producing and releasing products every day.
Who are we?
The Oxford Health Company is an award-winning contract manufacturing business specialising in the food supplement market. Since our incorporation in 2013, we’ve been recognised as one of the Times Top 100 Fastest-Growing Companies in 2023, with an impressive 58% average annual growth over the past three years. Our commitment to excellence has earned us numerous industry-specific accolades, including recent 2024 wins at the Oxfordshire Business Awards in both the Large Business and Green Award categories.
We are a dynamic, entrepreneurial team driven by a mission to become the UK’s leading Food Supplement Manufacturer, both in turnover and service quality. Our success is built on offering expert service and the industry's shortest lead times to new and medium-sized brands with high-value propositions.
Our headquarters and manufacturing facility are located in Bicester, with a second storage warehouse nearby. Since fitting out our state-of-the-art clean rooms and manufacturing facility in 2019, we have continued to invest in our infrastructure to better serve our customers and enhance operational efficiency.
What will you do?
Industrialisation & scale-up.
Support the transfer of new products from R&D into routine manufacturing with a focus on powders, tablets and capsules.
Help define the “best way to make it” at scale including blending approach, order of addition, mixing times, compression parameters, encapsulation settings and packaging considerations.
Identify scale-up risks early and work with internal TOHC teams to reduce disruption during launch and first runs.
Formulation and process troubleshooting.
Investigate common solid-dose challenges such as flow issues, bridging, rat-holing, segregation, weight variation, poor compressibility, tablet defects and capsule fill inconsistency.
Recommend practical improvements to formulations and/or processing parameters to improve yield, consistency, and throughput.
Support ongoing improvements to existing products where performance, manufacturability or efficiency can be improved.
Testing and product checks (lab + production support).
Carry out and interpret relevant testing on blends, raw materials and finished products to support manufacturability and consistency.
Typical checks may include bulk/tapped density, compressibility, moisture/LOD, particle size considerations, blend uniformity checks, tablet hardness/friability/disintegration and capsule fill weight behaviour.
Use data and observation to inform decision-making and ensure learning is captured properly.
Plan and execute small-scale and pilot production runs to validate formulation feasibility.
Documentation and communication.
Produce clear, useful documentation that supports scale-up and production readiness (formulation sheets, trial write-ups, manufacturing instructions, technical handovers).
Work closely with Production, Quality, Procurement and Commercial teams to keep development moving and remove blockers.
Support feasibility conversations for new product enquiries by assessing whether something is realistic with available equipment, ingredients and timelines.
What We’re Looking For
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering (or equivalent industry experience).
Experience: Proven experience in either pharmaceutical or nutraceutical/food supplement product development, scale-up, technical transfer or manufacturing support within solid dosage forms (tablets, capsules, powders).
Technical Skills:
Confident operating and interpreting results from common lab equipment (e.g., hardness testers, disintegration/dissolution equipment, moisture/LOD testing, tap density testing).
Practical understanding of solid-dose unit operations and how they translate from trial scale to commercial manufacturing (blending, granulation, compression, encapsulation), within either GMP pharmaceutical or GMP-aligned nutraceutical environments.
Key Competencies:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting.
Ability to interpret manufacturing instructions, product specifications, quality requirements and translate these into practical action on the manufacturing facility floor.
Clear technical writing skills, with experience producing useful documentation such as trial reports, manufacturing instructions, and SOPs.
